When it comes to certain castings of characters for video game or comic book adaptations, it’s understandable that fans have a “picture” of what the character should look like, sound like, and who might be best to play them. However, there are times when the casting isn’t “what the fans wanted at first,” and then the actor comes in and perfectly portrays the character in a way no one expected. Jim Carrey is an excellent example of that via his now multiple portrayals as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, and with Sonic The Hedgehog 4 officially happening, fans want him back more than ever.
With each movie in the line, Carrey has shown more depth and layers to Dr. Eggman while also embracing the look of the legendary video game villain. It’s truly a match made in heaven. To that end, as revealed by VGC, Jim Carrey was talking on a Japanese YouTube channel when he said he’d be more than happy to come back for Sonic The Hedgehog 4:
“I’m definitely open. I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, ‘that sounds fun’, then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me. I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in and say, ‘how about if you do this?’ They’ve been super helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.”
If you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes looks at the films, you can tell that Carrey gives his all every time while also being able to make the crew laugh with some unintentional comedy. He even played two different characters in the third movie via Ivo and Gerald Robotnik.
Now, as for how the 4th movie will feature him, that’s still up in the air right now. After all, at the end of the third movie, Ivo and Shadow “sacrifice themselves” to stop the Eclipse Canon from destroying the Earth. However, in the mid-credits sequence, we see Shadow is alive. Thus, it’s possible Eggman is alive, too.
Then, in the other post-credits sequence, we see the arrival of Metal Sonic, who is the greatest creation of Dr. Eggman in many respects. So, someone had to make that robot, and it would make sense to be Eggman now that the “truce” between him and Team Sonic is done.
