Randy Pitchford Wouldn’t Call Borderlands 4 An Open-World Game

That comes with more baggage than what Borderlands 4 offers.

Borderlands fans were delighted to see the first big trailer reveal of the next game last year. During The Game Awards, Gearbox Software opened up a little more about Borderlands 4. This new installment to the beloved looter shooter franchise has a lot to get excited about. One aspect that fans have gravitated towards, in particular, is the expansiveness this game offers. However, don’t consider this title installment an open-world experience.

Randy Pitchford, one of the founders behind Gearbox Software, recently commented on this aspect through X. The famed developer responded to a comment suggesting that Borderlands 4 offers an open-world gameplay experience for players. Instead, Randy noted that he wouldn’t use the term open-world to describe Borderlands 4. That’s because he feels this term has a lot of baggage that doesn’t apply to this particular installment. However, he stops short of giving any insight into what aspects this game installment might be missing when compared to other open-world games.

I wouldn’t use “open world” to describe BL4 because the term comes with a lot of baggage that doesn’t apply. You’ll see.

Still, it does look like this will be the most expansive installment of the franchise. As noted by GamesRadar, it was previously stated that players can reach any area they see without loading. So expect plenty of exploration. However, the beats between your destination will be more carefully constructed by the developers rather than aimlessly exploring an open world.

We’re eagerly awaiting to learn more about this game installment. As I previously stated, we only saw that first major trailer for the game last month. So we should have more marketing materials coming our way throughout the year. Likewise, this title is still slated to be released in 2025. While we don’t have a specific release date yet, players should see the game launch before the calendar year wraps. When Borderlands 4 finally graces its appearance in the marketplace, you’ll find the game available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
