Nintendo has been on a Donkey Kong kick recently adding all three Donkey Kong Land games for the Gameboy to their Nintendo Switch Online service. They’ve also announced Donkey Kong Country Returns HD for the Nintendo Switch. The game was originally released on the Nintendo Wii and later ported to the 3DS. Now an updated version is coming to the Nintendo Switch and we’ve just got a closer look at it.
As shared to Reddit by Turbostrider27, Nintendo uploaded a gameplay and feature trailer to YoutTube today. This video shows off some of the features, mechanics and areas that players will enjoy.
New areas
There were several areas showcased in this video however Nintendo chose to highlight five of them. A rich vibrant jungle, sandy sun swept beaches, eerie ruins, a jungle factory and stifling Volcano.
Movement Mechanics
The trailer also showcased the various movement mechanics players will be able to employ. A staple of Donkey Kong games bouncing off of enemies in quick succession. Pounding the ground to break down barriers, or beat enemies. Rolling through enemies and barriers and down slopes to speed up play and avoid injury as well as a slide that can be used in certain situations.
There will also be some other modes of transportation. Like: A mine cart that players will have to time jumps in to avoid broken areas of track. A rocket barrel used to dodge projectiles and foes and good old Rambi the Rhino charging through obstacles with gusto.
In previous games the Kong letters saved the game but in Donkey Kong Country Returns HD they unlock a secret level within increased difficulty. Pushing players to use everything at their disposal to avoid injury.
Controls and modes
Players can use Joycon motion controls to keep play interesting but if the game gets too challenging they can also switch to ‘Modern mode’. Modern mode is essentially an easy mode that gives players more hearts and more item slots.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD will be available on January 16th, 2025. If you’d like to read about the games initial announcement then click here.
