The history of Sonic The Hedgehog in the video game space is one of peaks and valleys. The irony is that many of those peaks happened when Sonic was in the 2D space, whereas many of the NUMEROUS valleys came when he was in the 3D space. Seriously, look up the 2006 game, and you’ll see why so many people make fun of it almost 20 years later. It took Sega and Sonic Team a LONG time to seriously figure out how to make Sonic work in 3D. But, in 2022, they did it, which is why Sonic Frontiers 2 was confirmed not long after the initial title sold over 3 million units.
So, what made that game worth the sequel? They put numerous elements of true open-world games into the title and ensured that Sonic’s speed fit into the game naturally. They also brought in a brand-new kind of villain, upgraded Sonic’s combat abilities, and more. The tactics worked, and that’s why many are curious about what a sequel will look like.
As noted on Reddit, there are two “leaks” on 4Chan that seem to point to Sonic Frontiers 2 having much of what the first game had, but in a more refined sense. For example, in the original game, Sonic and the others would travel to multiple islands along their journey. This time, the leaks state there will be a single large island for him and possibly other characters to travel on.
Another key element is that the vast majority of the original team is coming back to work on the sequel. That lines up with comments by the team earlier on, and it makes sense to bring back the team that made the game before, as they clearly know what they’re doing and will work to make things even better.
As for a potential release date, the leaks state that it might be in late 2026 or somewhere in 2027. These dates could change depending on delays, how long it takes to thoroughly test the game, and so on. Let’s not forget that while the original title was good, it did have many bugs and didn’t feel fully refined, which was one aspect that the game’s director cited would be adjusted going forward.
Oh, and before you say “it’s 4Chan, why should we believe them?” the Reddit thread creator reminded people that the first game was leaked initially on 4Chan, so while it may not be the best source of information, it can’t fully be ignored yet.
