It’s very easy to look at certain video game developers and publishers and believe that they’re nothing more than “cold, heartless machines” that want nothing more than to dive into a game and make it for monetary gain and prestige. You can look at certain events in recent times right now and get that impression. However, many developers and publishers are true gamers at their cores, and they want nothing more than to create something fun and beloved for others to enjoy. For Bethesda they absolutely love The Elder Scrolls and have apparently been missing it over the last decade or so.
This comes from Todd Howard, who recently did a YouTube interview where he notes that since the team finally started truly working on the sixth entry to their hit RPG franchise, the team had a lot of feelings about it:
“Now that we’re working on The Elder Scrolls 6 and we get to see it in the studio, you do miss it. I appreciate all of those thoughts and are with the fans […] We’re working hard on it. One day, we’ll have it to everybody.”
You might recall that MANY years ago, Howard was the one who revealed that the sixth entry in the franchise was coming. However, by his own admission, it was never going to be released soon after that announcement. Instead, that announcement was just to tide fans over until they could actually get to work on it. As such, the entry is likely several years away, especially when you look at the scale and scope that the insanely good fifth entry had.
Of course, one of the OTHER reasons why the franchise didn’t get the focus and attention that many fans wanted it to was because of a certain OTHER RPG they were working on. Yes, we’re talking about Starfield, which required hundreds of people across multiple teams to make and about eight years to develop. Working on multiple games is hard when much of your main team is tied up with one. That game didn’t deliver on many aspects, which frustrated people to no end, given how great Skyrim was in comparison. Oh, and that title was made by a much smaller team, for the record.
That being said, hearing from Todd Howard how passionate the team is about the game and how they want to do right by it means everything, and hopefully, they’ll deliver on their hopes and promises.
