While it’s true that the video game adaptation “Renaissance” is currently going on, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t films or TV series coming out based on games that fans aren’t nervous about. One such film that fans aren’t sure about is the Borderlands film. First off, the movie has had a rather tumultuous journey to theaters, including at one point being done for a long time, but no word coming out about whether it would be released or not. Then, when the trailer dropped, it wasn’t exactly what fans expected. However, if there was one “shining spot” within it, that would be Claptrap, played by the one and only Jack Black.
Jack Black is easily one of the best actors in Hollywood simply because he’s a guy who puts everything into every role he plays. That goes double for when he’s doing voice acting. Whether it’s Po, Bowser, or the upcoming Claptrap, you can expect Jack Black to give it his all so that his character shines.
He went on the Inside Total Film podcast to discuss being Claptrap and how fun it was for him:
“I love the voice acting. I also love that video game, so it was fun to be able to voice that character. He’s a cool, fun, little turn, and another opportunity to bring a great video game to the silver screen,” Black noted. “We’re kind of in the middle of a video game movie renaissance right now, and I’m stoked to be a part of it.”
One of the things he said about Claptrap is that he’s an “R-rated R2-D2,” which might sound like an odd way to describe the character, but it’s true. While R2-D2 was a bit “wily” in his films and series and wasn’t afraid to talk about, Claptrap is a whole other animal. He’s willing to kill on a dime, and he isn’t afraid to spew out profanities. If the trailer is any indication, Claptrap might be the one spewing out most of the jokes in the Borderlands movie.
But will the rest of the cast be able to elevate the film? That’s the mystery. You see, while the film adaptation of the Gearbox Software franchise has an all-star cast, that doesn’t immediately mean it’ll be good. That goes double when you realize that actors like Kevin Hart are supposed to portray characters that look and sound nothing like him.
But hey! At least we have Jack Black, right?
