Midnight Sun Developers Express Cards Were The Right Choice, Even If Others Don’t Think So

March 27, 2024 by Faith Lane

Cards were the right choice.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is a choice-driven card game that allows the player to make their own choices of where their active team moves, says, and what attacks they will perform through the power of different cards. While playing the game, you will have different Marvel characters, including yourself, on the board, which might take place in a city or other location, and it will be up to you to figure out which cards you want to play in order to win the match.

While Midnight Suns are nothing like Pokemon TCG, the game still has a unique style to it as it allows players to use cards to determine what will happen next, also making it so that each battle and fight will fall out differently because of that. This was a new style for Marvel Studios as their games are normally a lot more active-driven, like Marvel’s Avengers and Marvel’s Spider-Man.

Recently, the game director at Firaxis, who developed Marvel’s Midnight Suns, spoke at a Game Developers Conference in San Francisco about why they choose to use playing cards as a way to choose combat moves for the superheroes.

“Is it odd that we have cards in a tactical superhero game? Yes, absolutely,” Weinhoffer said. “We knew this would be a controversial choice, and that reception and first impressions would be mixed. We certainly had plenty of people see the game and say ‘oh, it has cards in it? Eh, nevermind, not for me.’ But was it the right fit for this game and our design goals? Yes, absolutely.”

Unfortunately, Marvel’s Midnight Suns got a lot of mixed reviews, but many also love the game and stand by it, and that’s what matters. The game can be played on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5.
