Star Wars Outlaws has received a rating from South Korea.
As shared on Reddit by user Ajxtt, Korea’s Game Rating and Administration Committee gave the title a 19+ rating. This is their equivalent of the ESRB’s Adults Only rating.
The rating is certainly a mild surprise. Although we did see that Star Wars Outlaws occupies the same “used future” that Lucas sought out to create in the first Star War movie, the presentation made it seem like a more lighthearted title.
Now, GRAC shared this description of the reason for the rating:
“- Realistic simulation of speculative behavior
– There is a mini-game with content of in-game betting and dividends.”
So, it doesn’t sound like we were misled by the game’s advertising and promotions so far. Korea raised the rating on Star Wars Outlaws incredibly high because it will have gambling in it, and that is a huge red flag for Korea’s ratings agency.
Ubisoft studio Massive Entertainment has shared small bits of what to expect in the game, and as a result, we know that protagonist Kay Ves is a lovable rogue in the same mold as Han Solo, but with a different background and narrative journey all on her own.
We also know that Ubisoft has built a reputation system for Star Wars Outlaws. This won’t change the one ending that all players will get through. Instead, it will affect how you play through to get to the ending. So you either become the most hunted fugitive in the whole galaxy, or you could be a loaded freelancer in a universe with more opportunities than you can handle.
It would certainly be hilarious if Massive allowed you to play Kay gambling for hours until you made her a millionaire. But given how Ubisoft handles mini-games, it’s more likely that this will be a single game segment that you can return to if you want, but the game will draw you to move on to the rest of the story.
Of course, we have left the most interesting thing about this rating for last. Star Wars Outlaws receiving a rating means that the game could be releasing soon. It indicates that Massive was finished with the title, to the extent that they could send out a finished build for review.
It’s possible that Ubisoft will delay the release in spite of it being ready, but as far as we know, Ubisoft has no reason to delay it. Ubisoft did confirm it’s coming sometime between April to December of this year, in a recent financial meeting.
Star Wars Outlaws is releasing in 2024 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows, exclusively on Ubisoft Connect.
