Following a shakeup at Tencent, the world’s largest video game company, the upcoming mobile entry to the Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Jade, has reportedly been delayed. The title has been in development for over four years and the beta was launched in 2022.
According to sources, Tencent has removed hundreds of staff members from the project, instead tasking them with work on the new party game DreamStar. The company is distancing itself from Western mobile franchises due to cost concerns. No comment on Assassin’s Creed Jade‘s fate has been given.
Set in Ancient China during the Qin dynesty in the 3rd century BC, Assassin’s Creed Jade will allow players to create their own custom character, while gameplay will be similar to past console releases.
The next mainline game in the series, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, will take place during the Feudal Japan period. Helmed by Ubisoft Quebec, the company behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, it’s expected to hit shelves next year. A brief reveal trailer was shown during 2022’s Ubisoft Forward showcase.
The most recent game in the series, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, was met with mixed reviews, with many praising its world design and stealth elements but lamenting its dull characters.
The Assassin’s Creed series began in 2007 with the release of the first title and has sold over 200 million copies as of September 2022, making it one of the highest-selling video game franchises of all time. A live-action film was released in 2016.
It’s uncertain when Assassin’s Creed Jade will fully release on mobile devices. Assassin’s Creed Codename Red, the next mainline game in the series, is scheduled to hit consoles by March 2025.
