In 2020, Ghost of Tsushima made its mark as one of Sony’s fastest-selling original titles, sweeping players away with its stealth gameplay, masterful story, and vast open world. Four long years after the release of the award-winning title, Sucker Punch Productions may finally be gearing up to announce a much-needed return to Tsushima Island–whether the original game’s ending left room for a sequel or not.
X user Haothors, in a now-deleted post, noted that a second Ghost of Tsushima game may be announced in May or June 2024 during a State of Play event. Although this reads like wishful thinking at first glance, Haothors predicted the contents of the last PlayStation State of Play correctly, along with the specs for the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West PC port, lending credibility to the statement in the eyes of netizens. Given that the first game sold almost 10 million units by July 2022 and a PC port may be imminent, conditions are right for a sequel reveal.
In February, Sony COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki announced that while several major projects are currently underway at the studio, no first-party sequels will be released during the next fiscal year. If Ghost of Tsushima 2 is announced, excited players will still need to wait a while longer for its much-anticipated release.
Originally released for the PlayStation 4 in July 2020, the Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut was released on the PlayStation 5 in August 2021 along with the Iki Island expansion. It went on to win numerous awards, including Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2020, Adventure Game of the Year at the 24th Annual D.I.C.E Awards, and the Award for Excellence at the Japan Game Awards 2021.
