Given the current state of video game adaptations and the decent reception that the previous film had back in 2021, there are many who are curious about Mortal Kombat 2. The movie promises to deliver more of what fans want, including finally doing the titular tournament that everyone knows the theme song to. Over the course of the last few weeks, the movie’s director, Todd Garner, has been slowly teasing all the characters that will be arriving in the film. We’ve seen teases for Shao Khan and his “daughter” Kitana, as well as the first look at Jade. But that’s not the character we’re going to look at today.
Instead, we’ll look at the following Twitter post from Garner for Mortal Kombat 2. Below is a wordless post featuring a picture of a white hand in the dirt. Many people guessed who that was, and one answer that wasn’t debunked was Quan Chi. Garner has spoken up in the past when wrong guesses were made, and since Quan Chi is known for being literally white-skinned, it makes sense that the hand is his.
Curiously, if this is Quan Chi, this will be his live-action debut in the films. He has appeared in the past for various “fan-made series,” but never in the official live-action productions.
For those who don’t know him or haven’t played him since he arrived in the recent game, Quan Chi is a powerful sorcerer and necromancer who has served Shang Tsung and Shao Khan loyally over the years. In fact, in multiple canon timelines, he was the one who transformed the man known as Hanzo into the leather NetherRealm fighter Scorpion. Quan Chi also set him up for that downfall just so Outworld could have another fighter on its side. So he’s definitely the kind of guy to play dirty.
Should this all be correct, it’s fair to guess that he’ll be involved in Shao Khan’s plans and possibly one of the fighters in the tournament trying to secure the warlord’s victory. And since Shang Tsung is still alive in the new films, the two could very easily scheme up some plots to try and take down the Earthrealm fighters before they have a chance at victory.
Either way, the film is slowly shaping up to have a rather robust roster of Kombatants, which should make fans happy. There is no word yet on when the film will be released.
