CD Projekt Red Will Remain Independent

January 2, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

Adam Kiciński speaks on 2024 projections.

There’s been plenty of acquisitions lately in the video game industry. Things might be settling down a bit now after that massive purchase from Microsoft when it came to Activision Blizzard. However, that doesn’t stop some fans from speculating about some of the independent game studios still out there. CD Projekt Red is one of the more notable studios that might have gained some attention. This company has made quite a name for itself with the release of The Witcher franchise.

However, it was during the initial launch of Cyberpunk 2077 that it sent the company backward. A horrible launch caused several plans likely to be scrapped. Instead, it was all hands on deck to turn Cyberpunk 2077 around. Fortunately, the studio managed to do so, along with releasing an expansion called Phantom Liberty. Thanks to a report from PCGamesN, we’re finding out that CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński spoke with Parkiet. During their conversation, the topic of being acquired came up.

According to Adam, there is no interest in being acquired. The CEO noted that the studio worked incredibly hard to get where they are now. This includes multiple studios and a means to work on a few projects. With this freedom, the company can thrive and grow. Of course, that doesn’t rule out the idea of CD Projekt Red acquiring their own companies. Adam noted that they do not have any plans to make any acquisitions in 2024 and don’t see any value in acquiring companies per se. Instead, it would only be of interest if it would allow the ability to accelerate the implementation of their own strategy.

We know that CD Projekt Red has a few projects in the works. For instance, there is work going into The Witcher 4, otherwise known as Polaris. This project will have an entire team within the year, which is around 400 employees, and even then, there will be a group getting the next Cyberpunk title, Orion, off the ground. We might not see any of these games within 2024, but we can rest assured that these game projects are ramping up development.

The latest title you can enjoy from CD Projekt Red is Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. This is a new edition of Cyberpunk 2077 made for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms. With this edition of the game, you’re getting the base campaign alongside Cyberpunk 2077’s expansion release, Phantom Liberty.
