Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Cost Insomniac Games $315M

December 19, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Leaked documents reveal development costs.

Insomniac Games is not having a good time right now. The developer was hit recently by a ransomware group that stole a vast collection of documents. It was put up online for a week to get Sony to pay the group off. Unfortunately, it looks like the ransomware group went ahead and released the documents online, so details on upcoming titles like Wolverine have been posted, along with a roadmap of what’s to come, have emerged online. One of the leaked documents that have surfaced online is based on the development costs for their projects like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

A few projects were revealed online regarding their costs and how much of a profit the studio has received. Thanks to the thread on NeoGAF, which posted the documents, it seems that Ratchet & Clank was not a success that the studio had hoped for. This title apparently was released at a loss of $8M. Meanwhile, Insomniac Games’ latest title release is Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. According to the post, that game apparently cost the studio $315M to develop, with a total profit of $75M.

Of course, this is still a relatively new release, and we might see quite a few more units being purchased this holiday season. But that at least gives us an idea of how much money was spent to ensure Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was a solid release into the marketplace. It doesn’t seem like it was too much of a gamble either, with just how successful Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and even Marvel’s Spider-Man Remaster were in the marketplace.

We also know that Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 is in the works, with the cost to develop this game seeing a notable bump. The Insomniac Games studio diverted over $385M to develop this next major installment. Of course, it will be a good while before we see this game hit the marketplace. As mentioned, a leaked roadmap for Insomniac Games revealed that this title is slated to hit the marketplace in 2028.

Right now, their next major project to hit the marketplace will be Marvel’s Wolverine. Officially, there’s only been the announcement trailer for the game, but we’ll likely see some new marketing materials emerge in 2024, especially since we’ve already seen plenty of leaked content regarding the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine online. This leak is a massive blow to upcoming reveals for Insomniac Games, and it could mean reworking some of the projects coming down the pipeline.
