We don’t get too many well-developed video game-adapted television series or films. Instead, they typically miss the mark by a mile, with most fans feeling let down. However, there are a few exceptions. One was the recent adaptation of Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. It might have helped that the video game felt like a cinematic experience. This development studio was able to pull off something that was incredibly thrilling, and now it has a new resurgence of popularity. Thanks to the television series, there’s a new group of fans who never enjoyed The Last of Us video games.
Fortunately, the series was so well received that HBO went ahead during the first season’s airing to greenlight a second season. However, that second season was put through a few delays. I’m sure you are all familiar with the recent Hollywood strikes this year. Those strikes, including HBO’s The Last of Us, pushed several productions back. Work had to cease, leaving the crew waiting to return to the project as soon as the strikes were over. Unfortunately, despite the strikes being lifted, it looks like another delay is pushing the production back even further.
After the strikes lifted, it looked as if The Last of Us second season would begin production in January of 2024. However, a report from Maxblizz has suggested that this production was recently hit with another delay that is pushing the second season to February 20, 2024. Their reasoning is due to actor Pedro Pascal’s schedule. It looks like the actor has to return for the production of his upcoming film Gladiator 2, which apparently conflicts with the second season production.
We don’t know exactly what the second season has in store for viewers. While the first season followed the first game rather faithfully, there was some additional content provided that wasn’t necessarily featured in the game. Regardless, we already know that the second season is not intended to finish the storyline up. The Last of Us Part 2 is far too large of a game to adapt fully into a single season. So unless this show tanks and HBO is forced into killing off the production, we should at least see a third season get announced. From there, it’s no telling if we’ll see another season or if the storyline will continue from where Naughty Dog left off when The Last of Us Part 2 wrapped. One thing is for sure, when season two does begin production actress Bella Ramsey can’t wait to dive into the stunts.
