While it may not have been on everyone’s “wish list” for 2023, Detective Pikachu Returns has arrived for Nintendo Switch. The game is a sequel to the hit Nintendo 3DS title that inspired the equally popular adaptation that starred Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu. The game puts players in a unique version of the Pokemon world where a young man named Tim Goodman can understand a particular Pikachu that can solve mysteries and drinks a heck of a lot of coffee. The unusual game was much different from the mainline series, and that’s likely what drew people to it, and now, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company are hoping it draws people in again.
In Detective Pikachu Returns, some time has passed since the original title, and both Tim and Detective Pikachu are still looking for Tim’s father. But before they can figure out that mystery, a whole new crop of adventures will pop up in Rime City. As Tim, you’ll talk with the various people and attempt to get answers about what is happening. As Detective Pikachu, you’ll talk to the Pokemon and not only get their information, but sometimes, they’ll help you solve the cases!
You’ll race around on Growlithe or use Luxray’s electric vision to see through walls and more! You’ll need to work as a team to learn the truth and solve every mystery that comes your way. Check out the launch trailer for the game below:

If you didn’t see, the reviews for the title have come out, and they paint an “interesting” picture, to say the least. The score went down from the last time we talked about it, and it currently rests at 69. That’s not the worst score it could’ve gotten, but it highlights many flaws within the game.
One of the biggest ones that reviewers pointed out is that this title was clearly made for kids. So, if you know a young gamer who likes the Pokemon franchise, you might want to get them this game. But if you’re looking for the depth of the mainline titles or some of the other spinoffs? You’re out of luck. They also note that the cases you go on aren’t the deepest, so beating the game probably won’t take much time.
The franchise team noted that they feel a third game is possible, depending on sales. So we’ll have to wait and see how it goes!
