Yesterday was a big day for gaming, as there were two big game preview events from two different companies, meaning there was a lot of news going around. For the Sony State of Play event, they highlighted some key titles that were sure to get fans excited for both this year and next. One of the biggest showings was Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which featured a truly deep look into the upcoming sequel to the remake title, and there were many details to be seen within. However, one detail that arguably could’ve been the most important regarded its release date and exclusivity.
Many fans were happy to hear that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth was coming out on February 29, 2024. Why? That means they only have to wait a little over five months to finally play the title. It also means it will help kick off the 2024 gaming year, which many can’t wait for. However, a piece of text you might have missed in that screen section was “not available on other formats until May 29, 2024”. That’s a key thing, as Square Enix and Sony have been trying to “spread the love” by bringing their titles to other systems.
Specifically, Sony has been bringing their PS4 and PS5 exclusives to the PC. When they did that with the last entry, not only was it a success, but they brought the full version of the game, which included the side story featuring Yuffie. Many people enjoyed that and were happy to have played it on PC, and you can bet that many will get the upcoming sequel when it comes to PC. For the record, this doesn’t mean the game will immediately come out on PC on May 29 next year. That merely means its exclusivity window is up. Given that the game is on two disks and there will be a lot of optimization to be done, it’s likely that PC gamers won’t get the title until later in the year.
Still, it serves the best interests of both Sony and Square Enix to get the PC port out as soon as possible. Why? Because while a game on PS5 can easily sell well, it’s not guaranteed. Square Enix recently took a big hit in stock despite the solid sales of a certain other title on PS5 alone. So that might make them a bit trigger-happy to put their next big title on PC to boost their sales.
