Star Wars Outlaws Narrative Director Talks Setting Tone and Game’s “Dream Setting”

August 16, 2023 by Todd Black

How to explore the galaxy in a different way.

2023 isn’t done yet; even if it were almost done, there has been plenty to talk about within the gaming community. For example, there have been numerous big-time releases alongside big-time announcements about what’s coming next year. One title that everyone has been enjoying talking about is Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft’s unique title aims to help gamers redefine what it means to live in the galaxy far, far away, and they’re excited to take part in it. The only people more excited are the dev team at Ubisoft, as they’ve been working hard to make the game feel special.

Key among them is the Narrative Director, Navid Khavari, who recently did an interview with Game Informer about the title and all it had to offer. One of the first things he noted was setting the mindset and tone for the game immediately. He stated that the “first step” for writing the title was understanding the “position” of protagonist Kay Vess.

She’s neither a Jedi, a soldier, nor a rebel of any kind. She’s a “scoundrel,” and she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get out of that life. That frames the galaxy in a new life and opens up numerous possibilities on what you can do while also letting the team know what she can’t do. That’s why you’ll need to use blasters, grenades, and even your pet to help get the job done.

What might surprise you, though, is that Khavari loved the ability to put Star Wars Outlaws in between two of the original trilogy’s films:

“I’m not gonna lie, it’s a writer’s dream to have that playground between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. For me, it’s such a perfect era where the stakes are so unbelievably high from both a character and a galactic perspective.

But placing our game during this time, I mean, that speaks to the power of that era, but also to the fact that there’s so much to explore in the underworld from a scoundrel perspective in that time period.”

He was quick to note that the team is going to “honor the past” while also trying to make their footprint in this era without breaking the canon. Furthermore, Kay Vess will be a “rookie” in the Galactic Civil War since she’s not on any side, and that will impact how she views things and handles certain situations.

If the team are able to pull this off? It’ll be a truly memorable experience.
