The Last of Us Season 2 Had Its First Episode Written Before Strikes

July 17, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

One episode down.

The Last of Us was a massive hit as a live-action adaptation series. HBO has a real winner on their hands, and it’s proven to be a well-beloved show from the amount of Emmy nominations the production has received. But while we all loved the first season, it might be a bit of a wait before we get the second season. In fact, the various strikes that have come up could further push the production back depending on how long they go on. Fortunately, we have good news for those eager for the second season. The first episode for the upcoming season was completely written and submitted before the strike began.

You might not have heard about the strikes if you’re not keen on keeping up with entertainment news. Two sets are going on right now, ranging from WGA to SAG. Essentially these are the writers and actors for Hollywood, and the strikes are putting a hold on productions. You could look into the various reasons behind the strikes, but ultimately, it means that your favorite shows and upcoming movies are mostly put on hold for viewers. Today we’re finding out that Deadline has the chance to speak with The Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin about the upcoming second season.

During their talks, Craig Mazin noted that they are actually pretty far when it comes to the work needed to be implemented for The Last of Us’ second season. The team behind the upcoming season, which ranges from Craig to those attached to the video game franchise like Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross, already knows what this season will encompass. Furthermore, the first episode was written and submitted right before the deadline for the WGA strike to begin.

We know what the whole season is, and I was actually able to get a write and submit the first episode right before the deadline hit. So now I’m just walking around kind of brain-writing, I guess, which I don’t think is scabbing. I take walks and I think through the scenes because when the bell rings and this is over because the companies have finally come to their senses, I’m going to have to basically shoot myself out of a cannon because we really want to try and get this show on the air when it’s supposed to be on the air.

Craig Mazin – Deadline

Fortunately, even though there are strikes going on that are halting production, there might be some breathing room. Craig notes that they might be hustling a bit, but right now, there doesn’t seem to be any threat of pushing back the intended release date for the second season. Just when that second season will air is still a bit of a mystery for us, but at the very least, it doesn’t look like we might be waiting any longer than what the team behind the show had intended. Furthermore, we already know that the upcoming season won’t contain all of the second installment of The Last of Us video game. So it would seem that we will at least get a third season for this show if the team gets the green light for a renewal.
