Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom Matches Biggest Nintendo Launch Ever

May 17, 2023 by Todd Black

Now that’s a launch

When The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom grew ever closer to its release date, and the hype grew ever larger, many had questions about its launch. Specifically, they wondered how big the launch could be. Would it be the biggest launch the franchise ever had? Could it top the biggest exclusive launch Nintendo ever had? Just how many people would want to get it on its launch weekend? That was a big quandary for numerous reasons, and early indications were that this game was going to sell huge. But now, Nintendo has come forward and revealed the truth and the truth is very impressive.

According to a Twitter post by Nintendo of America, The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom has sold over 10 million copies in its first three days! That has helped set numerous records for the franchise and for Nintendo as a whole.

The Legend of #Zelda: #TearsOfTheKingdom has sold over 10 million copies worldwide in its first three days, becoming the fastest-selling game in the history of the Legend of Zelda series.

If you want a more specific breakdown of how the sales went, the game sold over 4 million units in North and South America and over 2 million units in Japan. That means that Europe and the other nations comprised the remaining four million.

Those sales numbers mean that it’s the fastest-selling game in the series, and the fastest-selling game in the Americas, and it ties the launch record set by Pokemon Scarlet and Violet last year!

No matter how you look at it, this is a huge win for Nintendo, especially when the game is backed by rave reviews and plenty of fan love for it online. In many ways, it’s a stark contrast to many AAA titles that have come out recently, where they have plenty of fun things to do but numerous bugs to go along with it. You’re not hearing anything major going on with Link’s latest adventure bug-wise, and that shows how much care Nintendo put into this title.

This also proves that Nintendo was right to delay the game multiple times over, as they needed that extra time to refine the game and prepare it for launch.

As for what happens now, we get to sit back and watch the sales numbers go higher and higher. Plus, the game is solidly in the pole position for “Game of the Year” due to the response for it.

It’s always nice to see a game deliver a “complete package” and get rewarded with great sales, and gamers will be enjoying this title for some time.
