Bayonetta Origins Shows Off New Character and Gameplay Mechanics

February 28, 2023 by Todd Black

The witch’s mentor and the pet’s powers.

As we prepare to enter March, there are several games that fans are looking forward to in the upcoming month. Unfortunately, one significant game got delayed and pushed out of March, but there is still a set to be excited about. For Nintendo Switch fans, one such title is Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. The title from Platinum Games is the first spinoff to the franchise and acts like a prequel to the story of Bayonetta herself. We’ve been getting more insights into the title since the game’s announcement last year, and some new tweets further add to the fun.

The first tweet reveals an all-new character to the universe with serious ties to Bayonetta’s lore. We’re going to meet an Umbra Witch known as Morgana. She lives within Avalon Forest, the game’s setting, and will eventually be the mentor to Cereza.

A solitary Umbra Witch, Morgana lives an unimposing life near the edge of the Avalon Forest. Though usually avoiding contact with the outside world, she invited the practically orphaned Cereza to come live with her and has since made Cereza her pupil. #BayonettaOrigins pic.twitter.com/FpAQDXqw7g

There are multiple reasons why this revelation is so important. First, it’s never been stated how Bayonetta learned her Umbra Witch abilities. For those that don’t recall, the first game highlighted how Cereza was born from the “forbidden romance” of a Lumen Sage and an Umbra Witch. The “fusion” of those traits made Cereza a kind of “taboo,” and thus, she was seen as an outcast by many and even locked up when she grew older.

Yet here, at least one Witch was fine with her and willing to train her in the arts. The arts of magic that is. That would also explain how Cereza can use some abilities in the game, but she won’t be able to attack foes herself. That’s what Cheshire is for.

Another key thing in the tweet is the line about Morgana inviting the “practically orphaned” Cereza to live with her. That implies we could see Morgana at the beginning of the game or meet her very early on once Cereza enters the forest.

As shown in the last trailer for Bayonetta Origins, you must control Cereza and Cheshire to fight enemies and solve puzzles. Another tweet highlighted how Cheshire could take on “elemental cores” to take on puzzles and enemies alike. Additionally, the tweet highlights four elements Cheshire can become imbued with, which gives him many possibilities going forward.

More information like this will likely trickle out as we head to the March 17th release date for the game. No matter what, the game aims to be a magical experience, and Platinum Games is known for delivering more times than not.
