Does The Iron Man VR Game Connect To Insomniac’s Spider-Man Title?

Jan 13, 2023 Todd Black

It's connected in some ways, but not in others.

In the world we live in right now, plenty of properties love to have large, interconnected universes so that big things can come from them. In the TV world, the three series that makeup NCIS currently had a major crossover that set high ratings for the season. There have been video games that tie into this concept too. But the biggest interconnected universe out there is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’ve been going strong for over a decade and are gearing up for Phase 5 right now. But due to that, fans look for connections in other Marvel properties, including Iron Man VR.

Iron Man VR was made by Marvel Games and Camouflaj and is about to come to Meta Quest 2. When the game was originally released, many noted that it felt like there were teases or connections to another Marvel title. Specifically, they felt it connected to Insomniac’s original Spider-Man title from the PS4.

Why would they think that? In the game, Iron Man finds a building named “Oscorp.” That references Norman Osborne, one of the deadliest rivals of Spider-Man. Moreover, Tony notes that Norman is attempting an “expansion” outside the United States and that “something in New York” had him on edge. Later on, you found an article referencing how Osborne was in trouble thanks to a “gene editing therapy” he did. Some of these beats will remind you of the plot of Insomniac’s title, as much of the game’s events were Norman’s fault. Plus, that “gene editing” therapy was what he was attempting to do with his son Harry to save his life.

Marvel has repeatedly denied that the various video games in the works are going to be interconnected with one another. But in an interview, the writer of the game, Brendan Murphy, made it clear what was going on in more ways than one:

“It’s a little above my pay grade, but I will say when we were developing the game, it was being worked on after the success of Insomniac’s Spider-Man,” said Murphy. “We were working with the same folks over at Marvel and there were little Easter egg kind of things that existed in Spider-Man that we were able to put in our game. In terms of an “MGU”, I don’t know, there’s not necessarily a larger plan for that. But yeah, there are some Easter eggs in our game that speak to what happens in Spider-Man.”

So there you go. It is connected, and yet it’s not.
