The Game Awards decided to kick off the first half hour with some big surprises. But one that no one could’ve predicted was a continuation of the Bayonetta franchise so soon after the release of the third entry. At the show, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon was announced, and it will feature a much different feel than the original trilogy. In the title, which, as you can see, has a much different visual style, we’re going to see a young Cereza as she struggles with not only her powers but her desire to save her mother from danger.
If you recall, Cereza was born from the “Unholy Union” of a Lumen Sage and an Umbra Witch. The game will occur very early in Cereza’s life when she hasn’t become an Umbra Witch yet. She’ll have to enter a mysterious forest full of dangers and overcome the obstacles within. But fear not for her. She won’t be totally alone in there. She’ll have her loyal Cheshire at her side and be the first demon that she ever summons.
Everything about Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon feels different than the main titles, and that’s not a bad thing, given the different tone of the title. The visuals are more storybook and feel like from a kids’ movie at points. We also see a more top-down style with the camera and how combat will be handled.
While we won’t have all the information possible about the game for a while, there is one thing that is arguably more shocking than the rest. The game will release on March 17th on the Nintendo Switch! That means that the origin story will come out less than six months after the release of the last title. That’s really impressive. It also might explain what Platinum Games has been up to all this time.
Recall that it was 5 years ago that Bayonetta 3 was announced at the show, and PlatinumGames waited quite a while for things to get more revealed. They obviously didn’t want to make that same mistake again, so they did the big trailer and gave the release date.
More than likely, a Nintendo Direct will come in the new year, and we’ll get more details about the origin story.
Fans are already talking about the new game, and hopefully, more new game announcements will drop as The Game Awards continue. So stay tuned for more posts about those announcements!
