Dontnod has shared initial details for its upcoming period vampire RPG, Vampyr.
It is set in 1918 London, at the height of the stomach flu pandemic. Your vampire character, Jonathan E. Reid, takes advantage of a situation, as a known doctor, to quench his thirst in a city teeming with blood for the taking.
Dr Reid did not want to become a vampire, and he will struggle with using, and maybe even wanting to use his powers, at the start. Dontnod seems to want you to choose what kinds of people you will take out, and deem the world will not miss. You can even finish without killing anyone. If you do choose the latter, you will miss out on the blood harvesting based progression system. Abilities you can unlock include Mesmer, which let you lure victims into secluded areas, and Spring, which lets you Teleport.
The London of Vampyr is not fully open world. It is explorable, but made of hub environments with smaller zones connecting them. Combat seems to be a conventional skill based melee system, but the real highlight is Dontnod’s attempt to cross an adventure game into this action game.
As mentioned above, you can choose to finish the game without killing anyone. In fact, your choices will affect where the story goes, and what situations arise for you to react to next. In a sense, taking certain actions can unlock certain character arcs, that will lead you to several different resolutions and endings.
Vampyr will be released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2017. You can read more of our coverage below.
