The delightful parade of Super Mario Maker costumes continues, this week with a character a bit unfamiliar to Western audiences: Barbara The Bat! As the iconic lead character in the 2004 Nintendo DS launch title Daigasso! Band Brothers, this purple-haired heroine’s most recent appearance was as an Assist Trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The music game was released only in Japan but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy Barbara the Bat in Super Mario Maker, where her costume is awarded after completing the Event Course. See the cuteness in the release trailer, showcasing the course and the costume (and some of the music from Daigasso! Band Brothers), above. They will both be available starting the evening of February 25, 2016.
Other costumes to join Super Mario Maker in the past have included the Kanto starter Pokémon trio of Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander added earlier this month, and characters from Star Fox and Monster Hunter. A costume and event course for the popular anime and manga Nisekoi, featuring Chitoge Kirisaki, were the flavor of last week, and not only was the event course designed by author Naoshi Komi but it also managed to capture the spirit of Nisekoi by dividing the course into two paths, reflecting the series’ plot.
Super Mario Maker was also the recipient of the Family Game Of The Year Award this month at the D.I.C.E. 2016 Awards. Former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata was also posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was accepted by Reggie Fils-Aime on his behalf.
