Nintendo Switch Sports has been a big hit for the system, which is ironic given its long development history and people wondering if it would “live up” to the titles that preceded it. It did, and Nintendo is grateful for that. One of the things that they talked about during its launch was that the game would get free updates that would include new sports to be put into the title. The first update was that of golf, a classic entry from the Wii Sports era. However, at the previous Nintendo Direct in September, the team noted that it would be delayed from Fall 2022 to “Holiday 2022.”
Many people felt that would be proof of it not being ready until early next year. But now, a new ad for Japan has said that the golf update could arrive this month!
We’ll admit that the belief of it being out in November was because of Google Translate, but it would line up with the fact that this commercial/demo of the golf game has come out at all. Why would you release such a thing if the free update wasn’t coming soon? There are other elements to the belief as well. If you look on the Japanese version of the Nintendo Switch Sports website, you’ll see that a page for the golf game has been added. That further signifies that they’re getting ready for the game launch in the title.
But what about the rest of the world? That’s harder to say. It’s not impossible to say they might do a staggered launch for the free update, but it would be odd. Perhaps they wish to treat the Japanese launch as a kind of “playtest” before releasing it to the rest of the world. It’s hard to know. Many would’ve likely guessed a simultaneous launch, but the game has been dealing with many issues as of late, and that could be enough for Nintendo to take a more cautious approach to things.
Looking back at the commercial, you’ll see that a lot of care and detail went into the golf game. You’ll be able to use the motion controls easily and the controller more fundamentally to help line up the shot you want to take.
The only question now is, “What will Nintendo put into the game for free next?” We don’t know, but it will be exciting to find out!
