It’s been a memorable week for DC Comics fans, and for the first time in a long time, it’s for the right reasons. First, Black Adam debuted in theaters and had a very strong opening. Second, James Gunn and Peter Safran were revealed to be the new heads of DC Studios, a rebranded effort to get the DC Comics properties back on track in the movie, TV, and animation space. Finally, and arguably most importantly, Henry Cavill not only cameoed in the recent DC movie as Superman, but he also promised that it was a “small taste” of what was to come. Something that fans have latched onto and want to know more.
Naturally, many people started asking Cavill questions about what they could expect from Superman. One interview, which you can see in the part below, has Cavill staying tight-lipped on the immediate future. But, he did say he wants “hope, optimism and joy,” stating they’re “essential” to the character. Cavill is a well-known fan of Superman outside of being his actor and regularly cites stories that tie into the character’s core. So hearing him say this will undoubtedly intrigue fans and make them hopeful for what might come next.
Now, some might take that line as a dig at Zack Snyder, the man who directed the DCEU in its early days. The Man of Steel movie and its sequel Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, featured a somewhat dour Superman at points. Something that rubbed certain fans the wrong way. But he wasn’t insulting Snyder, far from it. In fact, in another interview, Snyder himself praised Cavill’s return while asking a question to him from the set of his latest movie, and Cavill noted, “He’s a lovely man.”
Furthermore, many fans have noted that Superman is still Superman in those films. The difference is they didn’t rush to make Kal-El the “symbol of hope” that he is in the comics and other series. Instead, they had the world struggle to understand his “symbol.” Something that was punctuated with his death in the second movie and the need to resurrect him in The Snyder Cut.
Regardless of opinions on those movies, many fans want a true sequel to Man of Steel, and reports state that pitches are being made right now for that potential film. Unfortunately, no one is tied to it yet, but given the seismic shift with the new heads of DC Studios, that could change soon.
If nothing else, Henry Cavill is ready and raring to go with Superman again. So whether they make a proper sequel first or pair him up with Black Adam down the line, Cavil and Superman are back. Something we should all be happy about.
