The Witcher has been getting a lot of attention lately for a good reason. First, the fourth title in the mainline series is coming from CD Projekt Red, and it could spawn a new trilogy if things go well. Second, the Netflix series based on the books/games are getting two series released within the universe in the next year. That includes the third season of the hit show starring Geralt of Rivia coming next Summer. Finally, a remake of the original title is coming from CD Projekt Red. Given the quality of certain remakes lately, that has enticed many fans. That announcement brings us to the reveal today, as it was declared that The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut would be “free forever” on GOG Galaxy.
If that long doesn’t ring any bells, it’s the superior version of the original title that came out in 2008. The game’s enhanced edition still holds up and features many improvements from the initial release. Plus, getting any game for free is a wonderful thing that many should take advantage of. That said, some aren’t happy that they must go through GOG Galaxy to get the free title. They see it as another directive by GOG to install their software even though it has plenty of issues and isn’t necessary in the slightest. Some people have found a way to get the game without the GOG Galaxy client, but it is a bit complicated. It’s up to you what you want to do.
If you’re curious about what The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut offers over the original version, it’s quite a lot. For example, in terms of dialogue, over 5000 lines were rewritten for the game. That’s a lot of words. Plus, they were re-recorded for quality to ensure the cutscenes were as pleasing to the ears as possible. Speaking of the cutscenes, more animations were added to the character models to look more lifelike and believable as they talked.
On the technical side of things, they improved the game’s smoothness and enhanced its speed so load times would take less time. Pressing buttons in combat will get faster reactions, and your inventory will load faster than before. If that’s not enough for you, the inventory system has been overhauled, and getting the game will grant you access to all sorts of bonus features from the team at CD Projekt Red!
All in all, it’s clear that the game is worth your time, no matter where you get it. Should you want it on something other than GOG Galaxy, we recommend the Steam version, as it’s only $1.50 presently. They also have the trilogy for under $12. So you have options if you want to try out the first adventure with Geralt.
