You may have been one of the thousands of people that tuned in yesterday to watch the very first trailer for the upcoming Super Mario movie, and if you were, then you might have been surprised by how good it actually looked. One of the stars of the film, a certain Mr. Jack Black made an appearance on the direct yesterday, and later in the day, the actor was asked a little bit more about the film.
The Nintendo showcase was aired at the exact same time as the New York Comic Con on Thursday (October 7) and during an appearance at the New York event, Black went on to explain what he thinks he brought to the role of Bowser. Black said, “I did bring some of my heavy metal roots. Bowser is kind of like a heavy metal rockstar, a big, strong, and scary rockstar. And I did a bit of rocking.” That’s such a Jack Black answer, and it’s what we like to hear as well.
This is where things get interesting though, as Black also mentioned that Bowser has a musical side, with the actor suggesting “after the movie comes out, I might take it to Broadway.” Now, wouldn’t that be a sight: Jack Black in a full-size Bowser costume rocking out like his glory days – it sounds absolutely glorious.
Back in April, there were some reports that suggested the Super Mario movie would be a musical, rumors that originated from a test screening and were made public by Giant Bomb reporter Jeff Grubb. And to support this, it has since been claimed that the film will feature several songs that will be sung by various characters like Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Bowser himself.
In one particular scene, Bowser is supposedly set to sing as the viewers are shown a montage of his younger years and his desire to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. Given that Jack Black is a multitalented actor, comedian, and singer – being the lead singer of Tenacious D will do that to you – he should thrive in this role and the musical number will be one to remember too. There have also been a few rumors flying around about the Mario brother’s song about plumbing, so let us hope they turn up on time for that.
Thursday’s Nintendo Direct also allowed Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri to talk about the movie’s progress. Meledandri said, “This movie had been in the works for seven years. Next week we complete the animation, and we’re knee-deep into the lighting and compositing too.” The trailer gave us our first insight into that animation, and we hope we speak for everyone when we say it looks incredibly crisp.
The Super Mario movie is scheduled for release on April 7, 2023, and along with Jack Black voicing Bowser, Chris Pratt will be voicing Mario, Charlie Day will be Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy is Princess Peach, and Seth Rogen will portray Donkey Kong.
