MGS 5 Sells 5 Million In Q2; Konami Sees Loss In Pachinko Segment

October 30, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

The developer probably did not expect to lose money in pachinko, but they’re unlikely to change their current plans.

Konami has revealed that Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain has come to 5 million shipments. They revealed this data in their Q2 financial report. This number includes digital downloads.

The large sales may be interpreted as vindication for Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, who is no longer employed under Konami after a mysterious private dispute that has played out publicly in very strange ways. Neither Kojima nor Konami has officially acknowledged the dispute, but even if Konami denies this, we know for a fact that the two are no longer in working terms.

The same report cites increase in revenues and profits from games and a dip in pachinko sales and health and fitness. To be clear, Konami credits game profits primarily to mobile game Jikkyou Pawafuru Puroyakyu , which had 17 million downloads since launch. Other notable releases for the quarter include PES 2016, the Yu-Gi-Oh card games, and their e-AMUSEMENT arcade games.

Konami also says their losses in health and fitness were expected, due to the closure of their health clubs pending a reorganization. They were probably unprepared for the losses in pachinko/pachislot business, which has affected that entire industry, but there’s no reason to believe they will shift from rumored plans to invest in gambling completely.

Did you buy Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain? Will you buy more Metal Gear Solid  games in the future? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
