The Sea of Thieves has been working on its lore issue, that is that the lore has been difficult to find in-game as it’s locked away behind Tall Tale adventures and hidden in journals. Well this book is considerably less hidden and Rare’s new novel Heart of Fire will hit shelves this August.
The new novel set in the world of Sea of Thieves (a fictionalized version of the real world) will follow the adventure of two pirate crews. Readers will follow the tale of Eli Slate, the captain of The Morningstar, and the notorious Captain Flameheart who helms The Burning Blade.
Players of the game may know Flameheart from his constant mention in Tall Tales, the new Adventures, and also as a giant floating head in the sky when his ghostly fleet used to be a world event (now since removed).
Eli Slate is less recognizable by name, making an appearance only during The Fate of the Morningstar tall tale. But his goal is largely to contrast the ruthless Flameheart. Author Chris Allcock has said his goal is to tell a story of ” two ships separated not by history, but by different views on what it means to be a pirate”.
This isn’t Allcock’s first creative foray into Sea of Thieves, back in 2018 he was the author of Athena’s Fortune; the first novel set in Rare’s piratical fantasyland. Which is fitting as Ramsey Singh of the Athena’s Fortune faction and Captain Flameheart of The Reaper’s Bones faction represent the two competing ideologies on the high seas: cooperative adventure and violent pillaging.
With the new time-limited Adventures now ramping up the villainous machinations of Captain Flameheart, the Sea of Thieves is more invested than ever in the history and motivations of this banished Skeleton Lord.
Sea of Thieves: Heart of Fire hits shelves at major retailers on August 16th.
