Wii U and 3DS Getting Pre-Download Functions

October 30, 2014 by Tony Ponce

President Satoru Iwata also talks more about the QOL Sensor.

Nintendo held its semi-annual financial meeting for fiscal year 2014 just the other day, touting strong sales of key software like Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Hyrule Warriors. Company CEO Satoru Iwata, back in top shape after undergoing bile duct surgery earlier this year, further addressed shareholders with a presentation detailing Nintendo's plans for the immediate future. One of the more notable talking points is a pre-download function coming to Wii U and 3DS.

When Super Smash Bros. for Wii U arrives on November 21, it'll follow in the wake of this proposed capability, which as on other consoles will allow Wii U users to purchase eShop games in advance of their formal release and have them automatically download onto their machines in time for launch day. The 3DS will also be updated with this function, though it won't arrive until 2015.

Iwata also brought up further details regarding the mysterious QOL Sensor, which as has been previously discussed won't be directly related to Nintendo's videogame business. It apparently will be a device that sits next to your bed in order to monitor sleep patterns, and then the data will be sent to a cloud server in order interpret the results and measure your fatigue levels. Afterwards, the sensor will give you diet and exercise advice to help improve your quality of life. It's a different avenue for Nintendo, but if it works, it should have a positive impact on the entire company.
