Super Smash Bros. 4 Sells 3.22 Million, Helps Nintendo Turn Profit

October 29, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Hyrule Warriors and Tomodachi Life have also been performing well.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is doing pretty darn well. How well? According to Nintendo's financial highlights for the six months leading up to September 2014, the portable fighter has shipped 3.22 million units worldwide. Because of its strong performance, along with improved foreign currency exchange rates, Nintendo as a whole has been able to earn a profit of 14.3 billion yen (about $132 million) for the first half of the fiscal year, a good jump up from last year's 600 million yen (about $5.5 million) during the same period.

That's not all! The life sim Tomodachi Life was released in Western territories this year and sold an additional 1.27 million, bringing its total sales since the Japanese launch to 3.12 million. As for the Dynasty Warriors-infused Hyrule Warriors, no hard numbers were given, but develope Koei Tecmo has reported in Famitsu magazine that the game met sales expectations in Japan and exceeded them the Western territories.

Actual Wii U and 3DS hardware moved 1.12 million and 2.09 million units respectively, bringing their total sales to 7.29 million and 45.42 million. For 3DS, this is a disappointing decline compared to last year, but for Wii U, it's an stark increase, helped thanks to Mario Kart 8. Hopefully, sales of both will be boosted even further with the launch of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Pokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire on November 21. Let's not forget those amiibo figurines either! That's big money, right there.
