Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Trademark Discovered

March 31, 2014 by Stephen Daly

Square Enix’s filing is still being examined but it’s unclear what it’s for.

Square Enix has filed a trademark application for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided but it's unclear what it's for.

The company last year released mobile spin-off Deus Ex: The Fall which made its way to Steam earlier this month and it's possible Mankind Divided is a similar project. Alternatively, Mankind Divided could be part of Deus Ex: Universe.

David Anfossi of Eidos Montreal, which develops Deus Ex and Thief, said of Universe:

"The concept behind Deus Ex: Universe is to create an ongoing, expanding and connected game world built across a generation of core games," he said at the time.

"It's a commitment on our part to deliver meaningful content that expands the franchise on a regular basis and to deliver a deep conspiracy that will span several connected Deus Ex games, creating a more immersive and richer experience than ever before."

Commenting on the concept at the top of this post, Anfossi said:

"It represents a 'ghetto-city' voluntarily built in order to separate the classes. The people in this segregated class have reshaped their environment, nostalgic for their ideal of Cyber Renaissance. This dark and dystopian vision sets the tone for things to come in Deus Ex."

This separation could well explain the Mankind Divided title.

The first game to be created as part of Universe is slated for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Mankind Divided's trademark was spotted on Europe's EHIM website which has contained several false patents in the past for unannounced games such as Fallout 4 but hopefully Square Enix will have something related to Deus Ex to show off at E3, Mankind Divided or not.
