When it comes to this year, in particular, there was plenty of excitement for the video game industry. We knew for a good long while that both Sony and Microsoft had plans to unveil their next-generation video game console platform. Unfortunately, we didn’t get too many details on the platforms last year and so far this year there weren’t too many be unveils yet to really make the platforms stand out to certain parties. One of those parties that would be particularly interested in a video game development studio by the name of PlatinumGames.
If you’re not familiar with the name, this development studio has brought out several iconic video game titles so far. You may know them from the Bayonetta franchise, Nier: Automata, or one of their latest video game exclusives on the Nintendo Switch, Astral Chain. Whatever you know them from, the studio head recently gave an interview with VGC. Atsushi Inaba spoke with VGC who claims that he’s excited to see what the next-generation platforms bring to the table but right now there’s nothing here that has him in shock quite yet.
That’s not to say that the studio head is in the know of the consoles. Inaba is still very much waiting for the big reveal, but he brings up the past by pointing to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the PlayStation. We went from pixel art to 3D video game graphics making the game industry blow up in a big way.
“But the comparison than I’m making is that… if you think back to the generation between Super Nintendo and PlayStation, and how we went from pixel art to 3D polygons… nobody could have ever imagined that a few years prior. When that stuff started coming out people were just blown away: they weren’t ready for it, they weren’t anticipating it… it was just so new.
Whereas I feel that the announcements that we’ve had for recent consoles generations, while all good and interesting, and of course I’m happy for us as developers to have better technology to work on… it’s a ‘perceivable’ future. There’s not the extreme surprise of the unexpected quality that I felt from the leap to previous consoles. Now I see the announcements and I think, ‘oh, that’s cool’ and then the next minute I think, ‘hmmm… what should I watch on Netflix tonight?’”

Likewise, the studio head pointed towards the Nintendo Switch stating that the platform made a huge jump by bringing out a console that was also portable allowing players to change the way the game. It’s these innovations that Atsushi Inaba is waiting for those big reveals as he’s not given any information prior to the reveals.
At any rate, we’re sure that there are some big features to be unveiled on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X still and if not the jump in performance and capabilities that the developers will have at their disposal will likely make for some incredible video game titles releases. In other news regarding the PlatinumGames studio head, the developer had debunked the rumors of Microsoft purchasing the company to develop games purely for the Xbox Series X.
