Review Roundup: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX Seems to be a Mixed Bag

March 6, 2020 by Jordan Biazzo

Planning on picking up this game?

Nintendo is known for their Pokemon games, and with yet another one releasing today — Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX, many gamers are once again excited to jump back into the epic universe!

However, some of us are wondering if the game is worth are time. If you remember there was some ridiculous drama surrounding Pokemon Sword and Shield, so to make sure that doesn’t happen again, gamers on the fence should make an informed decision before picking up the game.

We here at Gameranx gathered up a review roundup from some of the best gaming sites out there and put their reviews in perspective. According to early reviews, the game is filled with old school mechanics, a distinct combat system, and an emotional story. However, it is also frustrating, mindless and very repetitive; it seems to be a mixed bag.

Down below are some of the most respectable gaming sites in the industry, check out the highlights for their reviews on Nintendo’s latest Pokemon title— Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX :

GameSpot 80

Whether or not you’re an old-school Mystery Dungeon aficionado or a total newcomer to the long-derelict spin-off series doesn’t necessarily matter: Mystery Dungeon on Switch improves upon the originals with some valuable quality-of-life tweaks, making it a worthwhile play regardless of your familiarity with the series. It features a distinct combat system that provides an intriguing alternative to the mainline Pokemon formula with tile-based strategizing, humanizes the Pokemon you’ve fallen in love with over the years, tells a riveting and emotional story that will make you view the franchise in a totally different light, and does so with a stylish suite of visuals and music.

Nintendo Insider 80

It may see us return to an adventure that many will have first set out on nearly 15 years ago, but Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is yet another remake with the right approach. Modernised for a new generation and a worthwhile upgrade for those setting up their Rescue Team Base for a second time, it offers an enjoyable team-bonding adventure for those looking for a different pocket monster experience on the plucky portable home console.

USgamer 80

Though still imperfect, Mystery Dungeon more than makes up for its stumblings through one of the most sweet-hearted stories in the Pokemon franchise, backed by a solid dungeoneering system and a gorgeous aesthetic. If all Pokemon games were as forward-thinking and adventurous as this one, who knows what the franchise could be by now?

IGN 60

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a remake filled with samey dungeons and mindless combat that make becoming the best there ever was a chore.

Nintendo Life 60

A beautiful game with potentially hundreds of hours of gameplay, there’s still no getting away from the fact that this is a 15-year-old GBA title at its core. The dungeon crawling genre has evolved over the years to try and make things feel less repetitive, and while Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX does add some features to try to modernise the process a bit, they tend to fall flat. It’s still fun in bursts, it just gets samey after a while.

Eurogamer

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon DX is pleasant and cheery, but for every moment of depth there’s an accompanying frustration.
