Irrational Games isn’t being constantly pressured by its publisher to release a new BioShock game. Sure, just about every critic out there enjoyed Infinite and all of its unique narrative twists, but the world would still turn if the developer just left the series behind and moved on. For Ken Levine and his team to make another game carrying the BioShock name, though, an idea would have to come along that they all fell in love with. If that doesn’t happen, we could see an entirely new group of people designing the next story-driven experience in the series.
"In terms of more Irrational BioShock games, it's way too early to say. It will ALWAYS be dependent upon us having an idea that we're in love with and excites us,” Levine wrote on Reddit (via OXM). “IF we don't have that, I suspect it would be another studio making one, if there was one to make. But I can't imagine doing it if we weren't in love with the idea."
We saw BioShock 2 and its subsequent DLC, Minerva’s Den, find success outside of the Irrational ecosystem, but it would be a shame to see Levine move on entirely from one of the most interesting franchises out there. Burial at Sea, the first piece of story-based DLC coming to Infinite, is still on the docket, so there’s more content from the original creators to look forward to. But right now, we’re hoping that this grand idea for a new game passes by the desk of Irrational.
