Nintendo: Sony’s Vita Tries to Extend Living Room, 3DS Wants Actual Unique Experiences

August 29, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

The two companies have different strategies, and Nintendo thinks it has the right one.

Even if Nintendo and Sony and doing battle over handheld market share, the 3DS maker believes that its strategy is fundamentally different than its competition. While Sony thinks that it can bring the home console experience to players on the go, Nintendo marketing executive Scott Moffitt knows that the company’s 3D option is hoping create new, unique experiences that can’t be played on any other device.

"Certainly, on the handheld side, we're heading in a very different direction than PlayStation with Vita," Moffitt told GameSpot in a recent interview. "It really comes back to, in my opinion, the core strategy. I believe their view on the market is that the handheld gaming occasion and the home gaming occasion are one in the same, that people just have the desire to keep continue playing their home console game when they leave the house.

"And our philosophy, our belief, our strategy, is that we believe it's kind of a different occasion," he continued. "The moment of time you're willing to play, the amount of time you have able to play when you're away from home is different and your gaming behavior is different."

Not only is Nintendo taking a different tact, but Moffitt also argues that Sony’s particular strategy with the Vita just isn’t the right direction to go.

"You're not going to grab the whole bag of Doritos chips and sit on the couch for three hours; you have 25 minutes until the bus comes or whatever it might be," Moffitt said. "So the nature of the game ought to be a little different and the nature of the experience ought to be a little different. So I do believe on that, we have fundamentally different strategies."

The company will look to extend its reach with younger audiences with the recently announced 2DS.
