Nintendo to Release 2DS This October

August 28, 2013 by Stephen Daly

It’s a 3DS but, you know, in 2D.

Nintendo has announced that it will launch the 2DS this October and the handheld is essentially a 3DS without 3D technology.

The system is compatible with both 3DS and DS games. As you can see, it's shaped sort of like a slice of cake and does not flip closed. The 2DS will retail for $129 and will also be released in Europe.

A Japanese release has not been confirmed.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said "really, from a target standpoint, this is designed for that entry-level gamer. For a family of four with two kids, when you're looking at spending either $169.99 or $199.99 for two this holiday, now you've got a more affordable choice with Nintendo 2DS."

He described the console's design as "slate-like".

Despite the removal of 3D, Nintendo's Scott Moffitt told GamesIndustry that the company is not backing away from the technology.

"Not at all. Clearly our development efforts all include 3D games. Our installed base, we have eight million units installed. If 3D wasn't selling and wasn't part of our future, we wouldn't be seeing and enjoying the robust sales we have on 3DS right now. I think you know that the 3DS is the number one gaming platform on the market.

"We're having a very good year with 3DS. Our games continue to sell extremely well. Our forecast for pretty much everything we've launched this year has surprised us on the positive side. We've been very happy with the 3DS part of our business. This is really all about addressing that next opportunity in the US market."

You can watch a trailer for the 2DS below.
