It was during last week’s Nintendo Direct that the Mario maker shocked the world with the news of a new game set in the universe of A Link to the Past. One of the most well-regarded entries in the Zelda franchise, fans seemed satisfied with the simple prospect of a remake. However, it was soon revealed that it would be an entirely new experience, and now, it seems as if it could even have a “2” right in the title.
During a recent Japan-only Wii U Direct, series producer Eiji Aonuma discussed the highly anticipated title that’s coming to the handheld in the near future. Not only will there be fresh content never before seen in the first A Link to the Past game, but a "2" will appear in its Japanese title. This, in essence, turns this project into a sequel to the Super NES classic.
“The world of Hyrule has been reborn in a highly realistic stereoscopic vision, which will feature a new story and new puzzles to be solved,” Aonuma said. “The development for the successor of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is going smoothly, so, please look forward to it!”
Additionally, Siliconera has reported that the game has been in development since 2011, which is a pretty significant amount of time to keep a Zelda game under wraps.
Whether it’s a true sequel or simply another adventure in the universe, fans are excited. Expect to see the 3DS game launch later this year.
