A Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 Revealed for 3DS

Same world, completely different game

As revealed in today's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo is bringing a The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past game to the 3DS, and it's not even a remake. While this game will take place in the same world as that in which the original – which first came out on the SNES back in 1992 – was set, it'll include a new storyline (though we can presume Zelda will feature somehow) and new dungeons.

Those dungeons will be particularly interesting, because the designers have created the puzzles within them to suit the features of the 3DS. So while Link will still have to press switches, find keys, and open doors, he'll also get to try out a few new things. For one, the focus on 3D with this console means that puzzles play with height differences, which will be far more obvious if you play with the 3D turned on. In the clip we were shown in the broadcast, Link used bounce-back switches to jump from lower to higher levels. This ability to jump between different levels in dungeons will give the game more variety than the SNES version.

Another new feature that also plays with dimensions is the ability for Link to flatten himself into a 2D drawing of himself, much in the style of Paper Mario, and then shimmy along walls to access otherwise unreachable areas. Again, this will open up the possibilities as far as puzzles are concerned.
