Square Enix has finally lifted the lid on the third and final title in the rebooted Tomb Raider series. As previous rumours suggest, it will be called Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
To internet savvy users, the announcement won’t exactly come as a surprise. The hype train reached supersonic speeds in 2016 when a subway commuter in Montreal spotted a suggestive presentation. At that stage, the rumour held little weight, but subsequent leaks, probable release frames and cryptic tweets added the verification fans were looking for.
The latest Leak of the Tomb Raider occurred just yesterday, when the game’s release date and target platforms were allegedly discovered inside HTML code. We now know these findings were spot on. The official Tomb Raider YouTube account has posted a full teaser trailer and confirmed that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is releasing September 14 this year. It will enjoy a multi-plaform release (without timed-exclusivity) on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
With Crystal Dynamics hard at work on The Avengers Project with Marvel, the development helm has been passed down to Eidos Montreal (Thief, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided). Judging by the teaser footage, it looks like Lara’s next expedition will be taking place somewhere in Central or South America, and may have a connection with Mayan or Aztec mythology. This was also insinuated during the closing moments of Rise of the Tomb Raider, where Yucatán had been circled in red on a map.
There’s just one more thing we’d like to know — will Camilla Luddington be reprising her role as Lara’s voice actress? Let us know what you think.
