Rumors have been circulating for nearly two years concerning what many called a “Halo MMO” from Bungie. Well, the rumors weren't too far off – today Bungie announced Destiny.
The game is part of a 10-year publishing deal with Activision, and features a persistent world where players are allowed to create their own identities and scour our future solar system in an attempt to defeat evil.
A teaser trailer shows a myriad of different art pieces and introduces your position as a Guardian. While the game isn't necessarily an MMO, it certainly builds on the concept – there is no way you can save civilization on your own, as you will require a host of allied Guardians to stay alive on your treacherous journeys.
This doesn't mean the player won't be able to explore the galaxy alone, but Bungie has noted that in order to “realize the vision of the game,” Destiny is best played with a party and a constant internet connection.
What really separates it from MMOs is that of its unique network code. The game won't let hundreds of players flood into a crowded town square, as the code only allows a certain number of onscreen entities at one time.
The game is currently slated for release on both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles, though some modicum of discussion is being had on the topic of mobile devices. Considering the scope of Destiny, we’re betting that the game’s current release date of December 31, 2013 isn't far-fetched.
