The rumours are true—2006 cult-classic Okami is making its way to current gen consoles.
Born on PlayStation 2, Okami’s mythical, cel-shaded magic would eventually spread to Wii, and subsequently PlayStation 3 as a remastered or HD edition. Capcom’s announcement confirms earlier suggestions that Okami HD would be heading to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One before Christmas.
Okami’s rebirth on current gen consoles takes things up a notch, introducing 4K resolution that will truly shine on PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X. It also supports widescreen, but players are free to adopt the original 4:3 aspect ratio. The loading screen mini-game (earning bonus demon fangs to trade for in-game items) from the original release is also making a comeback.
Okami HD is launching for PC on December 12, with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions to follow on December 21. The release is limited to Japan. We haven’t heard about a Western release (or possible Nintendo Switch version) just yet. However, given Okami’s undeniable legacy, worldwide availability and the tendency for certain Japanese-brewed games (Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza 6) to launch on home turf first, it does seem like a logical progression. Stay tuned.
