In a revelation that will perhaps steal the entire show, Valve and Xi3 have just announced a partnership that will bring Steam optimization in the form of new hardware to the Xi3 Modular Computer. The device, designed specifically with high definition screens and Steam's Big Picture function in mind, is also currently at CES but so far there's no confirmation on specs or release date, as it is just in the development stage. Says Jason A. Sullivan, founder, president and CEO of Xi3:
"Today marks the beginning of a new era for Xi3,This new development stage product will allow users to take full-advantage of their large high-definition TV displays for an amazing computer game experience."
"As a result, this new system could provide access to thousands of gaming titles through an integrated system that exceeds the capabilities of leading game consoles, but can fit in the palm of your hand."
There has long been speculation that Valve would try in some way to get into the hardware market, but previously the rumors had centered on Apple. Certainly this is a new direction, and as an enthusiastic and frequent user of Steam on my 42" HDTV, one I'll personally be keeping an eye on.
