NieR: Automata isn’t just filled with unique art and odd design choices, it’s also got plenty of achievements and trophies to unlock for the discerning character action game fan. These aren’t your standard Platinum Games challenges either — the weirdness of NieR extends into the PS4 trophies / PC achievements, and unlocking these things isn’t always entirely obvious.
It helps that NieR: Automata is full of surpising secrets and interesting little tidbits to experience. This isn’t just about beating completely arbitrary challenges, it’s about fully experiencing one of those special games that was obsessed over by a clear madman. Taro Yoko, the mastermind behind the incessantly strange Drakengard series, is also onboard with NieR: Automata. Checking out every nook-and-cranny is your duty.

Find tips and links for each achievement / trophy in NieR: Automata below. There are a total of 48 trophies / achievements, of which 30 are hidden trophies / secret achievements.
Animal Rider
“Any animal ridden for 5 kilometers.”
There are two types of animals you can ride in Nier: Automata — boars and moose. They’re found in the open world, but they won’t let you ride them without a few items first.
- To ride an animal:
- Purchase Bait and a Satchet from any Supply Vendor. A vendor is available in the Resistance Camp’s Maintenance Shop.
- Find an animal in the environment — a boar or moose — and place the bait.
- While the animal is eating, press [Circle / B] to start riding.
If you miss your chance, you’ll have to place bait again and wait for the animal to start eating. You’ll have to do this every time you want to ride an animal, but the extra speed is helpful!
Ride around on an animal’s back for 5 kilometers as you progress through the game to unlock this trophy / achievement.
What Are You Doing?
“Look up 2B’s skirt 10 times.”
Here’s a weird one. This trophy / achievement is all about looking up 2B’s skirt — that’s the primary character and protagonist of the game you control. Before we go on, let’s all agree this is totally gross, and it’s a weird thing to do in a video game. But, this is a complete guide, so there’s no skipping the whims of Japanese perverts.
If you really must unlock this achievement / trophy, here’s what you’ll need to do.
- Find a ledge — any ledge will do.
- The open world is full of pits, drops, cliffs, and platforms.
- Tilt the camera down, then wait for 2B to jump away.
- That means she knows what you’re up to, and is judging you harshly.
- Repeat 10 times to unlock.
The Circle of Death
“Have your body collected.”
Your body remains in the exact spot where you died. To retrieve the data from your corpse, along with your belongings, you’ll need to retrieve the body.
There’s no way you’ll miss this one. Just grab your body for the first time and this will unlock.
Wait! Don’t Kill Me!
“Destroy 10 friendly machine lifeforms.”
As you progress through the story, you’ll encounter machines that don’t want to kill you. These first appear in the Amusement Park area — all you have to do is find and destroy ten robots that don’t fight back.
Come Take A Look!
“Shop at Emil’s Item Shop.”
All you have to do is find and shop at Emil’s special Item Shop. It appears in the open world soon after completing the story mission in the forest area. Find him driving around the northwest of the City Ruins: Center, near the entrance path to the Desert.
- Emil is fast! To stop him, use your ranged shooter drone.
You can shop for special items here, and also begin a quest to revisit a location from the original Nier. Emil’s sidequest is required to earn the Lunar Tear trophy / achievement.
