Death Stranding 2: What Is the Motherhood Code?

July 2, 2025 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Solving the puzzle to progress the story at the Motherhood base.

  • Motherhood Base Code | Puzzle Solution
  • Motherhood Rewards

Entering the Motherhood base in the ruins of a hospital, you’ll find something new in Death Stranding 2 — a keypad for a locked door. To get inside you’ll need to input a code, and unless you search the game carefully, you may have no idea what that code is. There are clues in the in-game encyclopedia called the Corpus.

This is all done during the Main Order “Recover Old BB Pod From Armed Survivalist’s Base” — a mission that forces you to stealth into an enemy camp, then enter the Motherhood with your new pod. Solving the puzzle at the end might be the trickiest part for some players, so if you’re stuck outside the Motherhood and need to know the code, here’s what to do to solve it and get inside.

Motherhood Base Code | Puzzle Solution

The door to the Motherhood base has a number-locked keypad — the code is cryptically mentioned in the mission briefing if you read it carefully. There are no clues outside the base itself in the physical world. Everything you need to know is in the Corpus.

  • Motherhood Locked Door Code: The locked code is the birthday you input at the start of the game.
  • This is a 4-digit code — so use your birth month (1-12) and the last two digits of the year.

How does the Motherhood know your birthday? The same way the video game does — it’s a weird meta solution in a game full of them. You can look-up your birthday in the Corpus if you don’t remember — and the clues area all there.

To find this clue for yourself, open the Corpus and search for the entry on the Motherhood. At the bottom of the entry, you’ll find an explanation that says what the code is you need to input and that it’s your birthday.

This isn’t the only reason your birthday is important. If you play Death Stranding 2 on your birthday, you’ll unlock a completely ridiculous cutscene where all the characters come out to congratulate you. Yes, you — the player! Even the bad guys show up to give you a big birthday pizza, which frankly looks disgusting with the chiral spider topping, but maybe that’s the point.

Motherhood Rewards

The Motherhood doesn’t seem to offer many useful rewards, but at Level 3 you’ll get something that’s very, very useful for later in the game.

  • Level 3: High-Capacity Blood Bags – A large blood bad with increased capacity that will restore Sam’s blood levels when connected. Empty blood bags will automatically be replaced by reserve bags. Can be stored in a utility pouch.

These larger blood bags will sustain Sam longer during big fights, and you’ll be encountering far more dangerous enemies in the later stages of the game. Giant BTs are much more common at this point in the story, and powerful Ghost Mech enemies can make combat far more difficult. These blood bags are essential, especially on higher difficulty. They can be stored in your Utility Pouch just like regular Blood Bags. They’re in larger containers but still fit in the Utility Pouch so always leave room for them there.
