You’re going to need a torch and a spade ASAP.

Two of the most important tools you’ll need in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 are the torch and the spade. These tools aren’t just important — they’re basically required if you plan on playing through the medieval survival simulator for long. The torch is useful for lighting up dark areas, and guards will put you in jail if you don’t have a torch to light up the darkness. The spade is useful for other reasons — mostly grave-robbing, which is a lot more common than you might think. Here’s where to get both valuable tools.

Where To Find A Torch

Torches are important items — you’re required to have a torch whenever it’s night. If a guard catches you outside without a torch, you’re viewed as a criminal immediately. Anyone caught sneaking around outside without a torch is viewed with immediate suspicion, even if you simply don’t own a torch.

  • Free Torch: Torches are found on almost anybody you’ll loot — and one is found very early in the game. After the prologue, go and visit Blacksmith Radovan and complete his quest “The Jaunt” — you’ll visit Semine and join the local lord on a hunt. You’ll eventually encounter and fight bandits.
  • The bandits you’ll encounter are carrying multiple torches. Collect as many as you can for free and store them on your horse inventory or in the shared chest. Keep one on your character at all times.

Torches can also be purchased from the local trader in Troskowitz, the starting town. There’s a vendor shop on the street opposite the Alchemist Garden. Enter and talk to the trader to purchase a Torch — many more vendors sell them for 6-10 coin. They’re extremely cheap.

  • How To Use The Torch: Equip to your character through the inventory menu. After that, you can bring up the torch by holding [D-Pad: Down] on PS5 / Xbox Series X or hold R on PC.

Where To Find A Spade

A Spade is an important tool for looting and for completing quests. A Spade is a shovel — it can be used to dig up and bury bodies, which is surprisingly common in this game. You’ll find an early Spade during the prologue, but the Herbwoman will demand her Spade back. You’ll have to find your own later.

  • An early Spade can be purchased from the vendor in Troskowitz in the shop opposite the Alchemist Garden. The Spade is expensive early in the game, costing 100 coins to put in your inventory.

Spades can be purchased from other vendors — the Nomads’ Camp also sells a spade. These items are surprisingly rare, and there isn’t an easy way to get a Spade without buying it or stealing it from a vendor. We recommend buying it. You can earn cash a dozen different ways, but here are some of the best ways to get rich quick.

The Spade is one of the most useful items in the early game. You can use it to dig up lost graves and loot the bodies — but don’t let anyone catch you digging up bodies in graveyards near town. Digging up graves come up fairly often in quests, so being able to do so gives you more options for quest completion. It’s worth grabbing as early as possible. You can use a spade by looking at a patch of dirt and interacting. You need it in your inventory, but you don’t need to equip.
