One of the most important items in Hyper Light Breaker isn’t available at the start of the game — you’ll have to earn it for yourself. Medkits are one of the best ways to stay alive in the early game, and you’ll have to fight to start using them. After unlocking the blueprint, you’ll be able to craft more, and the game doesn’t explain how to do any of it. If you’re lost and wondering why you’re dying so much, here’s one way to instantly make this ridiculously difficult rogue-like a little easier.
Hyper Light Breaker is currently in Early Access on Steam so there is a chance any of these instructions could change in the coming months before release. As of the time of this writing, this is how to get medkits.
How To Unlock Medkit Crafting
Before you can craft medkits you’ll need to purchase the “Medkit Capacity” upgrade — this is a little confusing, because while it does increase your Medkit Capacity, it also unlocks medkits permanently. Your current Medkit Capacity is zero. This upgrade allows you to carry two medkits.
- In the hub, talk to Pherus Bit the vendor. They sell the Medkit Capacity upgrade for 1 Gold Ration.
- Gold Rations are rare rewards found in dungeons or for leveling up a portion of the meter after finishing a cycle. Do as much as you can during a cycle run to progress the bar and earn Gold Rations — you don’t need to win a cycle to earn a ration.
- Equip the Medkit Capacity Perk and keep it equipped!
Once you have the upgrade, you’ll be able to start crafting. To make Medkits, you’ll need to hunt for resources called Medigems. They’re not rare, but you’ll put yourself in danger by searching for them.

How To Craft Medkits
Medkits are crafted before a run automatically or from a purple shrine with Medigems. Medigems are glowing green flowers that appear all over the starting biome.
- Collect Medigems — these are the resources you’ll need to create Medkits. Look for glowing green flowers in grassy areas.
- A Medkit will automatically be crafted before starting a run if you have the required number of medigems. You’ll keep medigems between runs.
- While in a run, find purple shrines and interact — you’ll be able to “buy” Medkits in exchange for Medigems.
Crafting a Medkit before launching a run only costs 3 Medigems and is the cheapest option.
The first Medkit you purchase from a shrine will cost 5 Medigems. The cost goes up after buying — the second Medkit will cost 8 Medigems. With the first Capacity Upgrade, you’ll only be able to buy two Medkits per run.
If you craft a Medkit at the start, then buy two Medkits from Shrines, you’ll be able to collect a maximum of three Medkits per run. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but it’s the only way to collect healing items in the early game — so get this critical perk as early as possible.
