Dredge is a game with all manner of interlocking mechanics that makes a rather enticing whole. The game has more than its fair share of unlockables and start-boosting systems, and Research Parts are one of the trickier ones to get to grips with. This is because, for the most part, the game doesn’t tell you how to get them.
Sure, you start with one early on, but getting more is not obvious, and the rewards for obtaining them are enticing to say the least. Powerful new rods and engines await you, allowing you to upgrade your low-quality fishing boat into a master of the tides. So, how do you get Research Parts, and what should you unlock first?

How To Get Research Parts In Dredge
Research Parts are a key resource in Dredge, so finding as many as you can is a goal most players should strive for. The more parts you have, the more you can unlock. These unlock grant drastic increases in effectiveness when out and about, so there really are no downsides here.
There are three mains ways to get Research Parts in Dredge:
- Completing Pursuits
- Travelling Merchant
- Dredging
Completing Pursuits
Pursuits are Dredge’s form of quests. These will often reward you with Research Parts (among other things), so tracking them down and completing them is a great way to ‘level up’ your fishing game. Pursuits will quickly dry up around Great Marrow, so be sure to explore other areas in the game if you are struggling to find work.
Pursuits are the most effective way to get Research Parts, but they are not the only way,
Travelling Merchant
You will bump into this Merchant from time to time, and they are willing to give you Research Parts – for a price. The price is, in our opinion, rather extortionate. They come in at $300 per Research Part, and early on, this is not money you will have on hand. Sinking excess money into these merchants can lead to bursts of upgrades and progress, but you have to weigh up whether breaking your bank is worth it.
Dredging
Finally, you can find Research Parts in the wild by Dredging. Dredging is an upgrade you will unlock early on in the game, and this will allow you to pull up various resources from the depths of the ocean. These tend to be scrap metals, lumber, or other crafting materials. Occasionally, however, you will get a Research Part.
Like with all things that you slot into your inventory, Research Parts take up space. Thankfully they don’t take up much, so you could have quite a stacked inventory if you got lucky.
What To Spend Research Parts On
Rods. You want to spend your Parts mostly on Rods in the early game. This will unlock better rods for more effective fishing, as well as Rods than can fish in different areas. Not only that, but some rods will also be space-saving, allowing you to fit more things into your cramped hold.
There are other things to unlock as well of course, but we recommend focusing on getting some powerful new Rods over just about anything else.
