Aperture Desk Job is a free to play game that was released only recently. Designed with the new Steam Deck in mind, it’s a short game that sees players take on the role of a low-level tester at Aperture. Testing out different types of equipment, including televisions and toilets, is the 30-minute long game’s main aim. However it really is intended to acquaint players with the controls and functions of the Steam Deck, so it’s definitely worth playing on that if you have one. A highly enjoyable game that’s fun to play on PC, Aperture Desk Job shows that Valve really do make great games.

Coming this year, Mist is an MMO RPG where players can explore a new world and play as one of six unique character classes. Featuring Roblox-style 3D graphics, Mist is described as a blockchain-based NFT RPG game, with a variety of sandbox dungeons and land building. The game will feature both PvE and PvP combat in which players can test out characters from a range of races and skill lines. This looks like an interesting take on an MMO with Roblox-like visuals, so it will be one to keep an eye on in terms of playability when it launches at some point in 2022.

GUNDAM EVOLUTION is a free-to-play FPS that focuses on fast-paced, immersive gameplay. Based on the hugely popular Gundam anime, this game sees players piloting Mobile Suits as they face off in six-versus-six battles. These team fights are objective-based, which means that you and your squad must really co-operate in order to win. The game features various different Mobile Units from across the entire Gundam universe. Players can choose whichever of these units best fits their play style, as they all feature different styles of attack and manoeuvres. Fans of high-intensity PvP battles should really get a kick out of this slick-looking, anime-inspired shooter.

As with most BR titles, the island features a snowstorm system that players will need to avoid as the battle rages on. This game has a very PUBG-esque feel about it and could be a big hit with those looking for the next generation of realistic battle royales.

Based on the original Ragnarok Online game, this sequel focuses on adventuring at your own pace to unlock a range of characters and cards as part of the storyline.

KartRider: Drift is currently in closed beta and beta test updates show that the game is definitely drawing an audience already, with over 2,000 beta testers reaching level 20in0game. Kart Rider: Drift brings a classic arcade feel to the kart racing genre but gives this game a modern-day graphical makeover, which is sure to impress new players. Developed in Unreal Engine 4, this racing game looks fresh and exciting, and with cross-platform multiplayer being an option, you’ll be zipping around your friends across the various kart racing tracks in no time.

Undecember is a free-to-play hack and slash Action RPG that’s planned for release this year. A top-down ARPG that looks to offer brutally satisfying combat, Undecember tasks players with becoming Rune Hunters and overcoming a range of trials. Some of these include chaos dungeons, large multiplayer raids, strategic guild battlegrounds and an 8-player PvP battleground known as the Crusade of Glory, to progress their champions through the storyline and level up their gear. Farming for runes appears to be a core component of Undecember, giving players the freedom to combine a range of Skill and Link runes in order to customize their Rune Hunter to their preferred playstyle.

In this game, you’ll explore a highly-immersive narrative adventure set in a futuristic universe. Additionally, there is a range of PvP game modes, namely Kill, Flag, Suicide Missions, Zombies, and Team Kill matches to try out aside from the story mode. Players will take on the role of Razr, who, alongside his faithful robot companion Jas, will explore a cyberpunk-style world while attempting to protect the world from the ongoing threats of a broken interdimensional barrier. Definitely one to keep an eye on if you like your third-person adventures with a slice of sci-fi on the side.

Featuring an asymmetric style of gameplay, Deadhaus Sonata gives players access to a roster of creepy creatures to play while they wreak mayhem on the living. The game also includes co-op gameplay for up to six people, so you can team up with your friends as you cause chaos for the poor souls of the mortal world, if you like.

Exploring the dark and atmospheric sewers beneath the city, you’ll soon find out that this strange new world hides plenty of secrets, and you’ll need to unlock certain skills for Sheepy in order to progress. This game is planned for release in the summer and will be one to watch for fans of indies and pixel art games.

This free-to-play casual survival game focuses on massively multiplayer battles, with players taking on the role of a mercenary known as a CROW. In order to survive in the game, players inhabit the role of a hired soldier and must compete in squads to achieve the objectives set out by the powerful nations they’re hired by. Players can enjoy Crowz both in online co-op or online PvP modes. The game is currently in early access so there’s not a huge amount known as of yet other than its militia-style combat mechanics look set to be a hit with fans of games like PUBG and Battlefield.

A brand new free-to-play online competitive first-person shooter, ExoMecha takes place on the newly-discovered planet Omecha. Venturing out into an untouched planet that features a range of exotic-looking scenery, you’ll encounter some rather large (okay, huge) mechs that don’t seem to be too welcoming. However, you’ll be able to control them yourself as they become part of your own combat arsenal. ExoMecha is a multiplayer battlefield experience that lets you take charge of your own giant mech in a bid to dominate the enemy team and gather the planet’s resources. The game is set to launch in early 2022, so we should see a release date pretty soon.

Another title set on a desolate but resource-filled alien world is The Cycle: Frontier. In this free to play, high stakes PvP and PvE first-person shooter, you’ll have to keep your wits about you to survive. The seemingly abandoned planet may not be as uninhabited as it first appears! Aside from the mysterious creatures who may be lurking, other players can try to steal your resources from you. You’ll need to search for materials and loot as you traverse this volatile new world, as well as make sure your stash isn’t raided by other adventuring prospectors. This game is all about treasure hunting and safeguarding your spoils, with an otherworldly twist.

Currently in development but expected to come out this year is Spine, a team-based action game in which players choose a side in a dystopian world. Players can choose to become freedom fighters or enablers of the new world system, in which an AI has transformed the city the game takes place in into a new ‘paradise’. That’s not quite how the resistance fighters see it, however, so there’s plenty of conflict and combat to jump into. Combat mechanics involve a mix of cold steel melee weapons and firearms for a varied feel to your fighting style. Spine features online multiplayer in co-op and PvP modes and is expected to offer full crossplay when it does launch.

Explore dungeons on your own or with friends, gather loot, follow the storyline and care for a range of collectable pets in this cute, cartoony RPG adventure. If you like a quirky looking indie game with cosy vibes then Transformice Adventures is sure to be a great game to try out when it launches this year.

Featuring solo play, co-op or PvP, it looks like online multiplayer is going to be a strong component of this game if that’s your preferred style of play.
#9 SCP: Nine-Tailed Fox

SCP: Nine-Tailed Fox is a recently released survival horror title. Currently available in Early Access, it forms part of the SCP franchise and Level 5 Clearance franchise. This latest entry into the survival horror series is based on SCP – Containment Breach, and tasks players with re-containing a variety of escaped anomalous monsters and entities (known as SCPs) that have managed to break free inside a top-secret research facility. SCP: Nine-Tailed Fox puts players in the heart of some tactical shooter gameplay as the head of a Mobile Task Force. It’s high-action and can be played in single-player, co-op multiplayer or multiplayer PvP modes. Fight your way through the containment breach and make sure the escaped monsters can’t escape any further. Just try not to get killed along the way.
#8 Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt

Currently in Early Access, but with Closed Playtests happening right now, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt is a third-person multiplayer battle royale game set in the World Of Darkness universe. Playing as a vampire, it’s up to you to survive the blood hunt in Prague, where you’ll need to make use of all your supernatural powers, as well as a range of available weapons to stay alive and survive being hunted by everyone else. Set in the stylish world of the Vampire: The Masquerade franchise, this Battle Royale is a great way to acquaint yourself with the World Of Darkness for free. It’s set to launch fully this spring.
#7 Heroes Of The Dark

Another title set in the Victorian era is Heroes Of The Dark, a strategy RPG that sees humans, vampires and werewolves facing off in a faction ar for survival and dominance. Players can choose a faction to belong to and begin exploring the dark Victorian landscape in this multiplayer RPG. It features a 5v5 battle system for players to develop their combat skills, and also offers a range of dungeons and world exploration for players to upskill their character with. The game world is persistent, meaning it continues to evolve even as you’re away from the fame. This is an interesting new IP and definitely worth checking out if you’re into RPGs with a dark twist.

Coming this summer is Fire and Maneuver, a new strategy game set in the bygone days of the Victorian times. Featuring some gorgeously illustrated graphics, Fire and Maneuver focuses on drawing a balance between historical information and exciting turn-based combat gameplay. Players will take charge of Europe’s greatest armies at the turn of the 19th century, as they progress through a range of factually-inspired battles. Experiencing Victorian-style warfare will require strategic thinking, especially as new technological and tactical advancements are being made all the time during this part of history. Definitely one for history buffs to get stuck into.
#5 MultiVersus

This free-to-play fighting game focuses on pop culture crossover content as it’s USP. Currently in development but actively accepting sign-ups for playtesting, this game is a crossover content fan’s dream. It focuses on 2v2 battles and makes use of a huge hero roster. The characters involved in MultiVersus come from a huge range of titles from the world of movies, TV, comics, cartoons and more. MultiVersus will also be available cross-platform. This game obviously has online multiplayer (in both co-op and PvP modes) as a core component, but it also features local gameplay, so you can team up with (or face off against) friends both online or at home. This one’s definitely one to watch if you enjoy a beat-em-up and have always wanted to do it with the likes of Tom and Jerry, Arya Stark and Harley Quinn.
#4 Overprime

A strategic MOBA game, Overprime is a team-based action game where two teams attempt to destroy each other’s bases. This game makes use of some pretty dynamic-looking graphics and employs a 3D TPS view of the action. There is a range of Prime heroes to choose from as you traverse the sci-fi inspired battlefield maps, and learning about each of their unique skills and tactics will be key to your success in the fight. Overprime will be playable in online co-op and online PvP modes and looks graphically pretty impressive from what’s been teased online so far. If you enjoy a multiplayer battle arena that’s all about crushing your opponents’ base, you’ll probably really enjoy this one.

Expected to release this year but with a date as yet still unannounced is Projekt Z. This is a first-person co-op shooter set against the backdrop of World War 2. Oh, and it’s all about killing zombies. Players will find themselves crashed upon a secret German island, where, as it turns out, the Nazis have been running a range of despicable projects which aimed to turn zombies into weapons of war. You’ll need to survive and fight them off as you inhabit one of the game’s various main characters. Interestingly, Projekt Z features a HUB as your main base, which implements a building mode similar to Fallout 4‘s settlement building mode. This is an interesting addition to a shooter game and so makes this one to keep an eye on if you’re into base-building too.

A free-to-play version of the survival simulation Outbreak Island, this game tasks players with solving the mystery of their plane’s crash using their camera and the tools available to them. Outbreak Island: Pendulum is set on Erlsen Island, a gorgeously atmospheric but potentially deadly world which will see you fighting for your life. As it turns out, the population of the island has collectively lost its mind after a mysterious experiment, so you’ll have to learn how to deal with them as you survive in your new surroundings. This game looks like it’ll be great fun for those who enjoy a bit of mystery in their storytelling, as well as fans of the survival sim genre.

Currently in Early Access, Open Mod gets a bonus mention as a free-to-play first-person shooter with a community focus. Developed by two indie devs, Open Mod is a tactical, extreme FPS title that aims to become a public FPS, and looks to grow slowly by attracting members of the modding community to help build and customise the game as it rolls out and builds a stronger player base. This is a niche game that features a slower pace than most first-person shooters, with no-respawn, round-based competitive modes that should please players who enjoy the immersion of battle without wanting some of the faster-paced mechanics of battle royale titles.

With no set release date announced yet, Jupiter Moons: Mecha – Prologue is one to watch out for. This game acts as a prequel to the full game of Jupiter Moons: Mecha and combines deckbuilding and tactical combat in a roguelike adventure. Set in space, this game is all about the gauntlet mode, in which players work to fight battles, equip their customisable Mech and level up their pilot until they reach the final boss stage. This should be a hit with fans of deckbuilding games and will give players a feel for what’s to come in the full main game of Jupiter Moons: Mecha.
